The family wanted the space under their hallway stairs to stop being a dumping ground for coats, shoes and the hoover. We replaced the old cupboard with a fitted unit that steps down with the stairs.

What we built

  • A tall section for hanging under the top of the stairs, with room for coats and the hoover.
  • Drawers and shelves in the sections that step down, each one sized to the height of the step above it.
  • Painted white fronts that keep a narrow hallway feeling light, over a grey interior that does not show scuffs from shoes and bags.

The top follows the line of the stairs, so there are no awkward wedge-shaped gaps above the storage. The run is left open, without doors, so the hall stays easy to use and the whole thing reads as one piece of furniture rather than a cupboard door.

Sample project on the Closetforge demo site. The pictures are 3D renders of the design, not photographs of a fitted wardrobe.

The design and the build

This is the design we drew for this job. Open it in 3D, turn it around, and start your own from it.

Questions about this project

Why leave it open?
In a narrow hallway a door swinging out gets in the way; open sections are quicker to use every day.
Why a grey interior?
It hides scuffs from shoes and bags better than white inside a busy hallway.
