Shallow hallway storage with a bench in Cranleigh

3D render

A narrow hallway left only a shallow strip of wall, and the family needed somewhere for coats, shoes and school bags by the front door.

What we built

  • Coat hanging in a shallow section, deep enough for coats but not so deep that it blocks the hall.
  • Pull-out shoe trays with a raised front lip, so shoes stay put when the tray slides out.
  • A low shoe bench to sit on while putting shoes on, with shoe racks inside.
  • A wall-hung cupboard above the bench for hats, gloves and the things that would otherwise end up on the stairs.

Keeping everything shallow mattered more than anything else here: the hallway still has room to walk past with the front door open. Hanging the top cupboard on the wall leaves space to sit on the bench beneath it.

Sample project on the Closetforge demo site. The pictures are 3D renders of the design, not photographs of a fitted wardrobe.

The design and the build

This is the design we drew for this job. Open it in 3D, turn it around, and start your own from it.

Questions about this project

How shallow can hallway storage be?
Shallow enough to leave a clear walkway. We set the depth around the space you need to walk past.
Why do the shoe trays have a lip?
The raised front stops shoes sliding off when the tray is pulled out.
